Hair Oiling 101: Pre-Wash vs Overnight with Growth & Strengthen Hair Oil (How to Choose)

Not sure if you should oil pre-wash or overnight? Here’s the simple way to choose based on your scalp and ends—plus exactly how to do both with our micro-press method.

Hair Oiling 101 with Growth & Strengthen Hair Oil: Pre-Wash vs. Overnight (How to Choose)

If you're hair oiling — or thinking about starting — there's one question everyone asks:

Should I oil pre-wash or leave it on overnight?

Both can work. The best choice depends on your scalp, your hair type, and what result you want. This guide makes it simple — no overthinking.

The Fastest Answer: Choose Based on Your Scalp

Choose pre-wash if you want:

  • The safest, never-greasy option
  • Scalp support without buildup
  • Softer ends and a clean finish
  • An easy ritual you can repeat weekly

Choose overnight if you want:

  • Deeper softness on very dry lengths
  • Extra frizz control and smoothness
  • A more intensive treatment (and you don't get oily easily)

If your scalp gets oily fast, start with pre-wash. Almost everyone wins there.

What Pre-Wash Oiling Actually Does

Pre-wash oiling means applying oil to dry hair before you cleanse. Think of it as a reset ritual — protection for lengths and scalp care that still finishes clean.

Why people love it: you get the benefits, then you shampoo — so hair feels soft but not heavy.

What Overnight Oiling Actually Does

Overnight oiling means leaving oil on your hair for longer, usually on the lengths and sometimes the scalp.

Think of it as deeper conditioning for dry ends — a treatment night. Hair tends to feel extra soft and look smoother the next day.

The Micro-Press Rule

Our dropper pulls up a lot, so technique matters.

A micro-press is a tiny squeeze of the rubber top — just enough to release a small ribbon into your palm. Always dispense into your palm first, spread thinly, then apply to your hair. Never straight from the dropper onto the strand.

Option 1: Pre-Wash Oiling (Our Go-To)

Best for: beginners, oily scalps, anyone who hates the greasy risk, wash day shine and slip.

How to do it:

  1. On dry hair, apply the Growth & Strengthen Hair Oil to ends first, then mid-lengths
  2. Optional: light scalp massage if your scalp feels dry
  3. Let sit 15–60 minutes
  4. Shampoo scalp-first — double cleanse if needed
  5. Condition mid-length to ends

How much to use:

  • Fine hair: ½–1 micro-press
  • Medium hair: 1–2 micro-presses
  • Thick/textured: 2–3 micro-presses, work in sections

Pro tip: if you oil the scalp, don't be afraid of a second shampoo. Clean scalp = light, bouncy hair.

Option 2: Overnight Oiling (Lengths-First)

Best for: very dry ends, thick hair, textured hair, people who wash in the morning and want a deep-soft finish.

How to do it:

  1. Apply the Growth & Strengthen Hair Oil to lengths and ends only — skip the scalp to start
  2. Braid loosely or use a claw clip
  3. Protect your pillow — silk or satin is ideal
  4. Shampoo scalp-first in the morning, double cleanse if needed
  5. Condition as usual

How much to use:

  • Fine hair: ½ micro-press on ends only
  • Medium hair: 1 micro-press
  • Thick/textured: 1–2 micro-presses, work in sections

Overnight is where "too much" shows up fastest — keep it light.

Can You Oil Your Scalp Overnight?

Sometimes. But it's not where to start.

Overnight scalp oiling works best if your scalp runs dry or tight, you don't get oily easily, and you're okay with double cleansing the next morning.

If your scalp gets oily fast or you're prone to buildup, keep scalp oiling to pre-wash only.

A Beginner Plan That Works

If you're just starting out:

  • Weeks 1–2: pre-wash lengths only, 1x per week
  • Weeks 3–4: add a second pre-wash day, or try one overnight on ends only
  • Adjust based on how your scalp and ends feel

No complicated schedule. Just consistency.

The Bottom Line

Pre-wash is the easiest, cleanest, most beginner-friendly option. Overnight is the deeper, more intensive choice — best for very dry lengths.

Both work. The right one is the one that fits your hair and your lifestyle — because that's the one you'll actually keep doing.
