Hydrate & Strengthen Hair Mask: What's in It, How to Use It, and What to Expect

What's in the Hydrate & Strengthen Hair Mask: a ceramide trio, hyaluronic acid, and beta-glucan. How to use it in 10 minutes on wash day.

You rinsed out your conditioner on Sunday and by Tuesday your ends already feel like straw again. Conditioner does its job in the two minutes it sits, then it is gone. A weekly mask is the step built for the part of your hair that needs longer than two minutes. This post covers what is actually in the Hydrate & Strengthen Hair Mask, where it goes in your wash day, how long to leave it on, and what to expect after a few weeks of it. It is for anyone whose mid-lengths and ends have gone dry, tangly, or dull.

The Hydrate & Strengthen Hair Mask is a weekly rinse-out deep treatment for mid-lengths and ends, in a full 300 mL jar at $33. It pairs a natural-forward base of aloe, shea butter, and plant oils with three actives from skincare: a ceramide trio, hyaluronic acid, and beta-glucan. Apply to damp hair after shampoo, leave it 5 to 10 minutes, then rinse.

What is in the Hydrate & Strengthen Hair Mask?

A natural-forward base carrying skincare-grade actives, with no silicones. The oils and butter do the softening, the actives do the hydrating and smoothing, and squalane handles the slip that silicones usually provide.

Here is what each part is doing:

  • Ceramide NP, Cholesterol, and Phytosphingosine. The barrier trio people know from their moisturizer, here for smoother, stronger-feeling lengths.
  • Sodium Hyaluronate and Beta-Glucan. Hydration that holds after you rinse, so hair still feels cushioned the next day rather than tight by morning.
  • Shea Butter with Argan, Babassu, and Pumpkin Seed oils. The same oil family as the rest of our line, for softness and shine.
  • Squalane and Hemisqualane. Lightweight slip that lets a comb move through wet hair, and rinses clean instead of layering up.
  • Panthenol, or Pro-Vitamin B5. Flexibility and easier detangling.
  • Aloe, Glycerin, Betaine, and Sodium PCA. The hydration base that pulls water into the hair and keeps it there.

Squalane is the choice worth explaining, because it is the one that cost us the most thought. Silicones are the easy way to make a mask feel slippery, and they work beautifully right up until the buildup starts and you need a stronger shampoo to get it off. We chose squalane and hemisqualane to carry the slip instead, so the softness you feel at the sink is the formula conditioning your hair rather than a film sitting on it.

The full list, in order: Aqua, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Glycerin, Propanediol, Betaine, Sodium PCA, Panthenol, Xanthan Gum, Behentrimonium Methosulfate (and) Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetyl Alcohol, Shea Butter, Saccharide Isomerate, Hemisqualane, Isoamyl Laurate, Squalane, Pullulan, Babassu Oil, Argan Oil, Pumpkin Seed Oil, Tocopherol, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Ceramide NP, Cholesterol, Beta-Glucan, Phytosphingosine, Panthenyl Ethyl Ether, Polyquaternium-10, Sodium Hyaluronate, Inulin, Dehydroacetic Acid, Benzyl Alcohol, Citric Acid.

Sulfate-free, silicone-free, paraben-free, and formulated for all hair types, including color-treated. The scent is a soft lavender.

How do you use it on wash day?

After shampoo, on damp hair, mid-lengths to ends, 5 to 10 minutes, then rinse. Four steps:

  1. Shampoo as usual, then squeeze the extra water out of your hair. Soaking wet hair dilutes the mask and it slides straight off.
  2. Scoop a generous amount and work it through mid-lengths to ends. Sections help if your hair is thick. Keep it off your scalp.
  3. Leave it on 5 to 10 minutes. Comb it through with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb while it sits, which is when detangling is the easiest it will be all week.
  4. Rinse well, then style as usual.

Ten minutes is genuinely enough. Leaving a mask on for an hour does not make it work harder, and the shower time you save is part of why the habit sticks. If you want the longer version of that debate, we went through it in overnight masking versus twenty minutes.

Keep it off your scalp. The scalp step in our routine belongs to the Growth & Strengthen Hair Oil, which goes on before you wash, not after. Full order on mask day: oil on the scalp, shampoo, mask, rinse, style.

Does it replace your conditioner?

On mask day, yes. Shampoo, mask, rinse, done. You do not need both, and using both by default is how people end up with heavy hair and blame the mask for it.

The exception is ends that still want more slip after you rinse. If yours do, follow with the Nourish & Strengthen Conditioner as normal. Fine hair almost never needs this. Thick, coarse, or very dry hair sometimes does.

On every other wash day that week, conditioner goes back to being conditioner. The two products are doing different jobs on different timescales, which we broke down in hair mask versus deep conditioner.

How often should you use a hair mask like this?

Once a week for most hair. Up to twice a week if your hair is very dry, or if heat and color have left your ends fragile.

More is not better here. A mask is a conditioning treatment, and hair that gets conditioned heavily every single wash starts to feel soft in a limp, weighed-down way rather than a healthy one. Once a week is the dose that gives you the payoff without tipping into that. If you are trying to work out your own number, how often to use a hair mask goes hair type by hair type.

Do ceramides actually do anything for hair?

Yes, and the evidence is better than most ingredient trends can claim. Ceramides are lipids that sit in the cuticle and in the glue between cuticle cells, and hair that has been bleached, relaxed, or heat-styled measurably loses them. Putting them back is one of the few ingredient stories in hair care with real fibre testing behind it.

The study worth knowing is Bernard, Franbourg, François, Gautier and Hallegot, published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science in 2002 (volume 24, pages 1 to 12). They tested a C18 dihydroceramide delivered in a shampoo on hair that had been chemically relaxed with guanidine hydroxide, and measured breakage during actual brushing using a method they built for it, the Break'in Brush Technique. Hair treated with the ceramide shampoo broke less than untreated hair, and the amount of ceramide that bound to the fibre tracked with how well it resisted breaking (Bernard et al., 2002, via PubMed).

Two honest notes on that. It tested chemically relaxed hair, which is the most fragile case you can put on a test bench, so it is a hard test rather than a flattering one. And it tested a ceramide in a shampoo, not our mask, so treat it as the reason ceramides are in the formula and not as a claim about this jar.

Who is it for, and what changes for your hair type?

It is formulated for all hair types, including color-treated. What changes is how much you use and how long you leave it on.

Fine and straight hair does best with a smaller scoop kept to the bottom third of the hair, closer to 5 minutes than 10, and usually no conditioner afterward. Wavy and curly hair can take a full scoop from the mid-lengths down and the full 10 minutes, and this is where the detangling difference tends to show up most obviously. Thick or coarse hair benefits from sectioning, because a mask that never reaches the middle of a dense section cannot do anything there.

Color-treated hair is worth calling out separately. Sulfate-free and silicone-free matters more once you are paying to maintain a color, and the ceramide and lipid side of the formula is aimed exactly at the surface that bleach and dye leave porous. We wrote up what to look for on that front in choosing a hair mask for color-treated hair.

What should you expect, and when?

Softness and slip on the first use, at the sink. Less snapping while you brush after a few weeks of once-a-week use. Nothing on day one that looks dramatic in a photo.

The first-use win is real and it is also cosmetic: hair rinses out soft and smooth, combs through with noticeably less force, and dries with shine that holds into the next day. That tells you the formula suits your hair. The slower change is the one worth waiting for, and it shows up in your brush before it shows up in the mirror, as lengths that feel stronger and snap less while you are styling.

Here is the part people do not want to hear: a mask cannot undo a split end. Once a strand has split, the only fix is scissors. What a weekly mask does is keep the ends you still have from getting there as fast, which is a slower and much less satisfying promise than repair, and it is the true one. If you want the general version of how masks work before you commit to ours, what a hair mask actually does covers it without the sales pitch.

Why Mimane Glow made this mask

Because the weekly treatment step was the hole in our own routine. We had the scalp step, the cleanse, and the daily conditioner, and the one thing customers kept asking for was something for the ends that needed more than two minutes. Took us a while, because the people who trust us with their hair deserve our best.

Here is what we tell every customer who asks whether they need it: if your wash day already leaves your ends soft and easy to comb, you do not. If you are detangling with force, or your ends look dull a day after washing, that is the gap this fills. The Hydrate & Strengthen Hair Mask is a full 300 mL jar at $33, which at once a week is a long time before you think about it again.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use it on color-treated or bleached hair?
Yes. It is sulfate-free and silicone-free, and it is formulated for color-treated hair. Use it on your regular wash day rather than immediately after a fresh color service.

Does it go on wet or damp hair?
Damp. Shampoo first, then squeeze the water out so the mask has something to grip instead of sliding off diluted.

Will it weigh my hair down?
It rinses clean and dries light, because the slip comes from squalane and hemisqualane rather than silicones, so nothing is left behind to build up. If your hair is fine, start with a smaller scoop kept to the ends.

Can I leave it on overnight?
There is no need. The formula is built for 5 to 10 minutes on damp hair in the shower, and a longer sit does not deepen the result enough to be worth sleeping in it.

Can I use it on my scalp if my scalp is dry?
Keep it to mid-lengths and ends. A dry scalp is a different problem with a different step, and the Growth & Strengthen Hair Oil is the one we use for it.

What does it smell like, and how big is the jar?
A soft lavender, and a full 300 mL. Patch test on your inner arm 24 hours before the first use if you have sensitive skin or known sensitivities.

Where it fits from here

Once a week, ten minutes, mid-lengths to ends, in place of your conditioner that wash. That is the whole routine change, and it is the smallest new habit we have ever asked anyone to add. Softness the same day, less snapping in a few weeks, and a jar that lasts long enough to actually find out.

Start it on your next wash day with the Hydrate & Strengthen Hair Mask.
